Law Day

On May 1st, the United States observes Law Day to celebrate our legal system and the freedoms Americans enjoy.

The New York State Courts Access to Justice Program sponsors Law Day events designed to provide social and legal information to the public. These annual events are celebrated in different counties in New York City and occasionally held in areas outside of New York City. Government and social service agencies participate by staffing resource tables with written material to inform and educate the public about the services that are available to meet their social and legal needs. In addition to educational resources, food, refreshments, and entertainment are offered, making Law Day a festive event.

More than 35 agencies are usually invited to participate in each Law Day event. Some of the past participants have included, Safe Horizons, Rent Stabilization Association, Department of the Aging, New York City Bar Association - Legal Referral Service, New York State Court Officers Association, and the Association of Small Claims Arbitrators.

Organizations that want to participate in upcoming Law Days can contact Jo-Ann Torres, Director of Community Outreach, NYS Courts Access to Justice Program at 646-386-4200 or emailĀ jltorres@nycourts.gov.
