NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
The court endeavors to provide information to attorneys and the general public about how the court functions, the forms it requires, its administrative offices, and similar matters. This web site is designed to do that. So are many other efforts undertaken by the court to communicate with attorneys and the public. In addition, for those who are contemplating, or currently are, representing themselves in this court, the court provides forms and information through the Help Center (Room 116, at 60 Centre Street, hours: 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.). Anyone who has any questions about appearing on his or her own behalf in this court or how the court functions and who is unable to discuss them with an attorney is urged to consult the staff in the Help Center. The staff will do their best to be of assistance. Some forms and instructions are also made available by the Help Center on this site.It is strongly suggested that anyone who is, or may be, a party to a legal case in this court that is significant to that person, financially or in other ways, consult an attorney to determine fully his or her legal rights, remedies, obligations, and potential liabilities. An individual, however, has the right to represent himself or herself in this court. (A corporation, though, must appear by an attorney. CPLR 321.)
Members of the staff of the court are not allowed to offer legal advice to anyone. That is the role of the attorney, who, upon undertaking a representation, assumes exacting responsibilites and significant duties toward the client. The court's role is to be neutral between or among the parties to any lawsuit and to decide all cases on the facts and the law, fairly, efficiently, without fear or favor.
Beyond this site and the Help Center, the following are Services to Those Representing Themselves:
Certain Bar associations have programs that may be of assistance to individuals who do not believe themselves to be in a position to retain an attorney. The Help Center can provide information about such programs.
