Brookyn Treatment Court
About the Court

The Brooklyn Treatment Court (BTC) links nonviolent, substance-abusing offenders to drug treatment and supportive services as an alternative to incarceration. Brooklyn Treatment Court Judge Jo Ann Ferdinand plays an ongoing, active role in the supervision of clients in treatment. BTC case managers assess and supervise the participants to ensure that they receive quality treatment. Participants return frequently to court to report on their progress and submit regular urine tests. Judge Ferdinand uses the court's coercive power to keep participants on track, rewarding good behavior and sanctioning non-compliant behavior.

To support participants, the Court offers a range of social services on-site. The BTC educational and vocational department determines client’s needs and accesses developmental services in the community. The Brooklyn Hospital runs the BTC Primary Health Care Clinic to provide onsite evaluation and health care. A psychiatric nurse identifies mental health care needs. Participants are required to complete a community service requirement, thereby giving back to their community. Participants who successfully complete treatment have their cases dismissed.
