The
Appellate Division is responsible for evaluating the character and fitness
of persons seeking admission to the Bar. This duty is discharged
by the Court's Committee on Character and Fitness, which is comprised of
practicing attorneys appointed by the Court. The Committee is assisted
by Court staff. After passing the Bar exam, applicants submit a written
application which forms the basis for an interview conducted by the Committee.
Successful applicants are sworn in before the Court at special ceremonies
in January and June of each year. At other times, the Clerk of the
Court swears in applicants. Each attorney admitted by the Court must
take the oath of office and sign the roll of attorneys.
